Exhibition & Art in Nordland – Artistic Interruptons, Artscape Nordland

NORTHERN PARTS OF NORWAY:
I was invited to exhibit a body of work in Trondhjem Art Association in 2005. The exhibition was titled «Displacements and Beginnings». It was a collection of photographs from Northern parts of Norway. All of which were thematically independent of each other. All photographs were taken during my stay in Bodø, as a producer of Art in Nordland – Artistic Interruptions and Artscape Nordland. Which is two large internationale contemporary art projects in Nordland county.

"I believe we go through certain crises, some internal struggles, where we have to shift gear and be honest with ourselves. We need something to hold on to." Quote Just Loomis.

DISPLACEMENTS AND BEGINNINGS represented a cross-road for me. A beginning, hence the title and the quote, of a more story telling aspect of photography. The photographs are not manipulated or staged. The motives are derived from quite different venues, and bound together -not thematically, but by personal experience. They are the result of an artist curiosity. An honest attempt to show here and now. This is what I am concerned about. A kind of status report that reflects a search for who you want to be and what you think about. The photographs show motives that most people pass by and do not notice.

This body of work tell different stories. They were fragments, glimpses of tales that could be intertwined to create a greater unity; like films where several storylines take place at the same time. Some pictures displayed little and seemingly unimportant props that were recognizable to the spectators from their own daily life; an invitation to include personal experiences whilst studying the picture. Others were unpredictable, mystical and a bit haunting with ambiguous stories. Others remained untold and forced the audience to make up their own tales that could lead them in many different directions.
