NORWAY: A new artist-run space for art
“Bakkan visningsrom for kunst, has a professional artistic profile with photography, socially engaged and contemporary art, with an emphasis on proximity to nature, site-specific materials, and the strengthening of women’s artistic practices.”
This statement describes what has been done so far and the possibilities that exist at the site. The exhibition space is approximately 30 m² and is located in the former stable, 30 meters from the main house at Bakkan property (farm no. 268/plot no. 16), five kilometers northeast of the center of Levanger city. It is situated in a rural setting at the address Børsåsvegen 74, 7609 Levanger in Norway.
Bakkan has its own Facebook page. The exhibition space is located at ground level and has step-free access via a glass sliding door with a 112 cm opening. There is a road leading directly to the space and parking immediately outside, with capacity for approximately 16 cars, as well as parking by the main house. The space is built on private property but has a public profile. The Norwegian artist Brynhild Bye-Tiller is the artistic director and responsible for "Bakkan visningsrom for kunst" in Levanger, Norway. Among other things, the space will make the art collection of the late artist Eli Anne Tiller accessible to the general public and to other artists who wish to explore her artistic practice. It will also present temporary productions by Brynhild Bye-Tiller and invited artists.
The site is south-facing, located in a hilly landscape with forested plateaus, a stream, a groundwater well, tractor roads, cultivated land, and a garden. The natural resources of the property are available for the production of art. In addition, the space is located in Børsåsen, an area by the Trondheim Fjord that Levanger municipality seeks to provide with increased protection and make accessible as a recreational area. The road up to Børsåsen runs through the property and past the space, offering art and cultural experiences alongside nature experiences to passersby—contributing positively to both physical and mental health. Both Eli Anne Tiller and Brynhild Bye-Tiller have local roots. The viewing room will therefore highlight local artists and align well with the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 11 on sustainable cities and communities and local identity, as well as Goal No. 3 on good health and well-being.
